Keeping PSJA Healthy: Respiratory Illness Prevention Tips

Keeping PSJA Healthy: Respiratory Illness Prevention Tips

(Please take a few minutes to read this message.)

Dear PSJA ISD Parents and Guardians,

As we move through the school year, respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19, influenza, RSV, and the common cold continue to circulate within our communities. The Health Services Department would like to share important information to help keep our students, staff, and families healthy and reduce the spread of illness in our schools.

Families can help reduce the spread of illness by encouraging the following preventive measures:

· Wash hands frequently with soap and water.

· Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow.

· Avoid touching the eyes, nose, and mouth.

· Stay current with recommended vaccinations.

· Encourage healthy habits such as adequate sleep, good nutrition, and hydration.

· Keep children home when they are sick.

If your child develops symptoms of a respiratory illness, such as fever, cough, sore throat, congestion, fatigue, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, please keep them home and consult your healthcare provider as needed.

COVID-19 Return to School Guidance

Students who test positive for COVID-19 or are experiencing symptoms of a respiratory illness should remain at home while they are sick. Students may return to school when:

· Their symptoms have been improving for at least 24 hours, and

· They have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.

Upon returning to school, families may consider additional precautions for the next five days, such as practicing good hand hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, and wearing a mask if desired.

Our district continues to promote infection prevention practices and routine cleaning procedures to help maintain a healthy learning environment for all students and staff.

Thank you for your partnership in helping keep our schools healthy. If you have any questions, please contact your child's school nurse.
