PSJA ISD Pathways Toward Independent students compete at State Powerlifting Winter Games

PHARR- Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD Pathways Toward Independence (PTI) proudly announces the remarkable success of four of its students at the recent State Powerlifting Competition Winter Games at Bee Cave, Texas. This event featured over 200 competitors across Texas, showcased the talent and dedication of the young athletes statewide. 

In a display of extraordinary skill and determination, all four PSJA PTI students not only participated but excelled in their respective weight classes. Each student achieved remarkable results, earning medals and personal bests in multiple lifts. 

Sofia Escalon, a PTI senior, demonstrated her incredible talent by earning four medals in various categories at the competition including squat, deadlift, bench press, and 3 lift combination. Her outstanding performance reflects her hard work and commitment to the sport.  

“It was a great experience,” said Sofia Escalon, PTI senior. “It was great meeting so many people at the competition.” 

Coach Matthew Garcia’s enthusiasm and commitment to his students’ success is evident in his dedication to expanding the team and helping more athletes qualify for state competitions. His leadership and guidance played a significant role in the team’s success.  

“Just being a part of this competition in general has been an amazing experience and a blessing,” said Matthew Garcia, PTI Powerlifting Coach. “These students showed strength, tenacity, and a continued desire to set higher goals. " 

ThePSJA PTI Program—which houses the LIFE House—promotes the continued development of vocational training skills and/or functional independent living skills to assist special needs students in becoming emergent adults in the community. The program allows students to develop employability skills and access post-secondary education. 

 

The following are the results of the State Powerlifting Competition Winter Games: 

Desiree Luna  

1st Place – Deadlift, 1st Place – Squat, 4th Place – Bench press, and 4th Place – 3 Lift Combination. 

  

Sofia Escalon 

2nd Place – Deadlift, 4th Place – Squat, 2nd Place – Bench Press, and 2nd Place – 3 Lift Combination. 

  

Pedro Trevino 

2nd Place – Deadlift, 2nd Place – Squat, 2nd Place – Bench, and 2nd Place – 3 Lift Combination. 

  

Rigoberto Rodriguez 

3rd Place – Deadlift, 2nd Place – Squat, 4th Place – Bench, and 4th Place – 3 Lift Combination.   

Overall, the accomplishments of these PTI students at the State Powerlifting Competition Winter Games exemplify the spirit of determination, resilience, and excellence.
